In a world full of soda, be a kombucha!

If you’re not drinking kombucha, what ARE you drinking? Sugary drinks like soda (and yes, even fruit juices can wreak havoc on your health). Refined sugar is a prime suspect for increased inflammation in the body, and low-calorie sweeteners can be equally detrimental, “tricking” your body into treating them like real sugar, causing blood sugar spikes, and increasing risk for type II diabetes. Kombucha offers a flavorful alternative without the cost to your well-being. This point can be confusing – isn’t sugar added to the brew? Yes, this sugar is required as the food for fermentation, but its breakdown leaves only small amounts compared to sugary soft drinks. So, do yourself a favor, and swap your go-to beverages for a sparkling glass of ‘bucha. In a world full of soda, be a kombucha!

Tried a new tea blend for latest brew of tea in my continuous brew method of brewing homemade Kombucha. With this new tea I’ve learned a few new things. The tea particle size is smaller than the loose leaf tea that I’ve been using. With the smaller particle size you get more contact area of the tea leaves in the brew and the flavor is better and the speed of fermentation is quicker as well. Also, using the muslin tea bag or a disposable bag is the way to go versus use a tea ball or other type of tea brewing container. The particle size is smaller and may pass through the tea ball. I am very pleased and happy with this blend of tea and the price is right too. This will be my go to tea blend in the future!! Plus their customer service is the best ever out there. They helped me with some good pointers and have been extremely quick to follow up.

The new scoby created from this tea looked very healthy like those you see on the internet…bright white and no spots. It seemed to brew a little faster then the pure black tea I was using so it was a little more sour after 10 days then I’m used to even though the temperature in the house was cooler. Maybe this tea had more nutrients? Aside from the little extra sourness (which I didn’t mind), I honestly didn’t taste any difference between the quality black tea I was using and this blend. But I liked flavor of the tea I was using and I liked this blend just fine.
Keep in mind this is finely cut so you will need a disposable or reusable tea back or extra fine mesh strainer (don’t use plastic!).
So, flavor was good, the scoby grew better, and this blend seemed to be priced well (I paid $12/lbs, most others are asking $16 to $20 for their blends). So I plan to keep ordering this blend as long as the price stays about the same or equally low in comparison to others over time.

My girls love kombucha, but the bill was getting in the hundreds per month a couple years ago. And I was looking for more Daddy/daughter bonding activities, so I figured let’s brew some booch and save some $ too! It’s become a monthly tradition. We do a 5 gallon brew once (or twice sometimes) a month, then do a few different recipes in 1 gallon jars with spigots. Those go in the fridge, and the girls use the soda stream to carbonate whenever they want it (did the secondary ferment thing a few times…made a couple epic messes and had some good laughs, but imo it’s more trouble than it’s worth). We have tried a few different blends and found this one a couple months back. I don’t really drink it too much, but the girls say it’s the best tasting, and the mothers visually look better than with teas we’ve used in the past. And it also happens to be the best priced…winning. The girls love it, and I love making it with them, so I’ll be buying this one from here on out. 5 stars!
